The hotel is in the middle of a rain forest. I just kept waiting for a dinosaur to walk by. The staff was AMAZING! Absolutely, exemplary! Five course dinner was delicious and romantic. Breakfast was anything you could dream of!

We were a family of 4. Kids have their separate beds and the room has a great view of the glacier. The kitchenette was well equipped and the jacuzzi was a cherry on top

A must see on any New Zealand itinerary, but one day is sufficient. Perfect for adventurous young people who like walking, not so much for older persons. The helicopter ride was bit of a rip-off as the weather closed in and we could not land on the glacier. Although they did give us a little refund, it was not up to our expectations and very expensive 20 minute ride.

Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora...
Beautiful World Heritage site with exquisite natural flora and fauna. The walks were amongst the most scenic and beautiful we’ve ever experienced. Only downside, which I feel needs to be more clearly explained to visitors, is that the glaciers themselves can only be seen and viewed from the lookout points if it is a clear day without low hanging cloud. We were disappointed to not actually see the Franz Josef Glacier nor the Fox Glacier from the fartherest reach of the walks. Environmentally, we were not prepared to fly/chopper to see the glaciers from the air. Nevertheless, the walks themselves are a must do, driving through the region is gob-smackingly beautiful and the walk around Lake Matheson a must see.

Our helihike was cancelled due to weather, so we did a quad bike in the rain. IT WAS AWESOME! We smiled for the entire two hours.
There is a sweet chapel for quiet and reflection.
We never saw the glaciers as it rained for three days straight which was so sad.
The grocery and a few restaurants were enough to find something to eat.

We were unlucky with the weather, as there was low cloud and some rain. We took a couple of walks to see the glacier from viewing points which were really good. Paths were very good, not muddy, and there were signs to explain the ecology and history.

A small town with a couple of shops and plenty pubs/restaurants. The glacier is 7kms from the town - drive to the car park and then there’s a short walk to the viewing area - you’ll need binoculars or a long lens to truly appreciate the beauty of the glacier. Fox Glacier is 30 mins away and again there’s a pretty uphill walk to a viewing area. You can get a helicopter onto the glacier but they are $$$.
Lake Mathewson is worth visiting while in Fox, park at the car park and walk 30/40 mins to the jetty. Beautiful especially at sunset but use bug spray as there are lots of midgies!

Our room was spacious and comfortable, meals were of a high quality, with breakfast outstanding, and all staff friendly, welcoming and efficient. When weather closed off our helicopter flights we had no problem extending our stay in the same room inspite of almost a fully booked hotel. Our experience at Scenic Franz Joseph led us to book Scenic in Dunedin and we experienced the same high quality there.
The rural location was superb with views to the Franz Josef Glacier. We were so glad we stayed out of town. Although it's an excellent town with supermarket, cafes and facilities we enjoyed the rural surrounds of Te Awa Cottages. They felt homey, warm and comfortable with everything we needed to explore the region including maps. We enjoyed sitting on the the wide veranda, watching the sun set over the mountains and the night sky. It was one of our favourite places we stayed and we'd love to come back one day.
Great location: walking distance from bus stop, restaurants, supermarket, kiwi center, helicopter rides, glacier and glowworm hikes. The host was quite helpful in providing hike suggestions and restaurant opening times as we arrived on Christmas day. Spacious living room for family activities. The coffee (Robert Harris) provided was particularly nice, much better than those in 4-star hotels later on our trip. Milk was provided from a glass bottle at the reception.
The bed was very comfortable. The room was warm which was appreciated that near the glaciers/mountains. The breakfast provided was generous and tasty (cereal, bread, etc). I appreciated the map provided, both for helping me find my cabin and for the local activities and attractions it mentioned. The trees around the cabins and bird calls nearby contributed to a lovely, cosy atmosphere - retreat is a apt name for it.
The host Benjamin was amazing ! Somehow everytime you realized you needed something he already had it ready for you. The soup in the evening hit the spot every time, and the hottub is very well kept and was great after a long day of hiking. The whole glow worm accomodation hostel and staff were warm and welcoming. It was easily the best hostel we have stayed at in New Zealand.
Liked the closeness to the center of Franz Josef. However being a very small town, it isn't hard to be near the center.
Close to Callery Gorge and Tatare Tunnel hikes so that was a plus. No need to drive to the start off point.
Accommodation was good and the bed comfy enough. Everything worked and functioned fine. Would likely stay here again.
A spacious studio unit with comfy beds and very clean and tidy. Perfect location and an easy one minute walk to shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants. If you're wanting to go hiking, it's a great location and close to the Franz Josef glacier too! Highly recommend staying at Alpine Glacier Motel.
The location is excellent, with easy access to Franz Josef township and only 30 minutes from Fox, but slightly out of town to be away from the noise. The two bed apartment we had was spacious and had two separate bathrooms, which is a plus compared to similar accommodation in New Zealand.
Absolutely loved this little cabin. It felt like being in the middle of nowhere but so close to Franz Josef. The weather was kind and we had views of snow on the mountains and a sky full of stars every night. Very cosy and comfortable with a lovely and welcoming host.
The Deluxe Two Bedroom Spa Treehouse was nicely decked out, with two large bedrooms and bathrooms. The outdoor spa was a lovely addition. The location is in the heart of Franz Josef, walking distance to all the restaurants, shops, tour offices, etc.
This hostel provides free breakfast and hot soup which is rare in New Zealand. Location is good, you can find supermarket, restaurants, gas station near to it. Room is nice and clean, and the heat is powerful enough to keep us warm.
Perfect location. View of the glacier from the front of the motel, close to helicopter tour, and King Tiger Restaurant (so delicious)! Good parking, laundry facilities. Staff running the motel very friendly!
Good location, close to many amenities and a good starting point for the Franz Josef Glacier walk.
Being one road behind the SH6, it was a quiet area.
Very helpful staff, with good local recommendations.
Very central in Franz Josef, beds were extremely comfy and walking distance to most of the cafes / restaurants. Plenty of parking available. Friendly staff!
